The Lubavitcher Rebbe’s role in bringing about the Era of Moshiach is central and decisive, as he is recognized not only as the leader and prophet of the generation, but also as Moshiach himself, responsible for the final Redemption.
According to the sources, his mission is to prepare all of humanity for the transition to a new reality.
Here are the key aspects of his role, as described in the sources:
1) Prophetic proclamation of Redemption: The Rebbe revealed to our generation that we are the last generation of exile and the first generation of Redemption. He declared that Moshiach is already among us and „stands at the threshold.“ His primary prophetic message was: „The time of your Redemption has come!“
2) Global Preparation of the World: Through his worldwide network of emissaries, the Rebbe carried out the „expansion of the sources of Chasidism.“ This teaching (Chasidism) is the „Torah of Moshiach,“ and its widespread study serves as a preparation for people to perceive Divine revelation naturally.
3) Transformation of Reality and „G-d’s Wars“: The Rebbe actively influences global processes. Sources link events such as the fall of Communism, the mass immigration of Jews to Israel, and international disarmament treaties („beating swords into plowshares“) to the Rebbe’s work as Moshiach, waging „G-d’s wars“ through peaceful means.
4) Passing the Task to the People (28 Nissan): On 28 Nissan 5751 (1991), the Rebbe took the unprecedented step of declaring to the Chasidim: „I have done everything I could... from now on, you must do everything in your power so that Moshiach will come today.“ From that moment on, the main work of the generation became the people’s acceptance of the Moshiach’s royal authority and preparation for his practical welcome.
5) Link and source of vitality: The Rebbe serves as a „connecting intermediary“ (memutza mechaber) between G-d and the Jewish people. He is the „Common Soul“ (Yechida Klalit), through which divine energy flows into our material world.
6) Eternal life and continued guidance: According to the rulings of hundreds of rabbis and the Rebbe’s own words, he is endowed with eternal life in the literal, physical sense (a soul in a body). His apparent concealment after 3 Tammuz 5754 is viewed by sources as the final test of faith before the final revelation. He continues to guide the world from his residence in „770“ (New York), answering letters through the collection „Igrot Kodesh.“
Our primary task today formulated by the Rebbe is to „open our eyes“ and see that the world is ready for the Redemption, which has already begun.
