At the end of the first Gulf War, 16 Adar 5751 (1991) the Rebbe King Moshiach at a farbrengen expressed himself that „the American armed forces should have success in their war in Botzra.“
It was seemingly out of place, since the war had ended without any fighting in the Iraqi city of Basra. In the second Gulf war, 12 years later, the allied forces did in fact take Basra. Is that what the Rebbe was referring to? Maybe. But see this:
In the sefer „Kli Paz“, a commentary on the Neviim (books of the Prophets) written over 400 years ago, the author (Rabbi Shmuel Laniado) comments on the verse in Yeshaya (34:6): „...a slaughter (zevach) for Hashem in Botzra...“
He writes as follows: „There is a city far from Babylonia [Iraq] called Botzra, and it is located between the borders of Ashur and Paras [Persia, today Iran] and the border of the land of Edom. It is called Hormuz and today it is under the rule of the Ishmaelites... perhaps the war at the end of days will go through there.“
Already several times Iran has threatened the US that it will close the strategic Straits of Hormuz, and held military exercises there.
